Discover Underwater Adventures Close To Home

There are beautiful underwater adventures from coast to coast right here in the U.S We have been trained to think that we have to go to Cozumel or Thailand or some exotic place to scuba dive. If we are going to go diving or snorkeling we have to see stingrays or dolphins or some bubble eyed fish that swells up when excited. To have a glorious time we need to see coral reefs and yes they are beautiful to see. But there are beautiful underwater adventures from coast to coast right here in the U.S. My goal isn’t to get people deep sea diving. My desire is to get you and your family scuba diving for the enjoyment near you and your home.

I live in south central Kansas home of the murky lakes. Yet there are places to scuba dive fifteen minutes to two and a half hours from my home without leaving the state. granted it probably isn’t for the thrill seekers but it is great for family fun. There are half a dozen sand pits within twenty minutes of my home that are great for seeing and feeding some nice size fish or just relaxing and enjoying underwater adventures. Wilson Lake is two and a half hours from my home. Wilson Lake is known as the clearest lake in Kansas but this is the exception. Boasting 9,000 surface acres of water and over 100 miles of scenic shore line make for a fun place to scuba dive. Water clarity is better during the spring and fall. But even then clarity is only around fifteen feet but enjoyable non the less. The important thing it is inexpensive diving that the entire family will enjoy. Wilson Lake has great mountain bike tails that are rated intermediate with good climbs and even better descents. Scuba dive, mountain bike and dive some more.

Another underwater adventure lake is Lake Tenkiller. Although for this scuba diving adventure I have to leave the state and go to the neighboring state to south Oklahoma. It is more of a full weekend trip because it is a 4.5 hour drive but well worth it. The water clarity is good, ranging from eight to 35 feet at Lake Tenkiller and has depths to 165 feet. Offering dive adventures for the novice to the most adept divers. Here is a good example of having as much excitement at 15 feet as you would at 165 feet because you can feed the fish or spear fish at minimal depths. If you spearfish you will need to obtain a fishing license. Underwater there cliffs and bluffs much like above ground and a town that was left behind when Lake Tenkiller was being built. Underwater adventures are possible year round because the water ranges in temperatures from 90 to 30 degrees. So when it’s warm leave your wet suit in the tent or put it on. Another great scuba diving weekend for the entire family that is relatively inexpensive.

When I sat down to write this article I was thinking on the lines of getting the family scuba diving together, young and advanced in years. I really just want more people to experience the joy of underwater relaxation. To remove the thought from our minds that we have to purchase airline tickets and head off to faraway places to really enjoy underwater adventures. I live in Kansas and have managed to discover underwater adventures close to home. So what are you waiting for? Start your families underwater adventure soon.
